Allina Health receives three Minnesota Hospital Association awards
MINNEAPOLIS 05/22/2013--Each year, the Minnesota Hospital Association honors the best and brightest in Minnesota health care with its Annual Health Care Awards. On Friday, May 17, Allina Health was honored with three health care awards.
Allina Health received the Community Benefit Award (large hospital category) for its investment in the Free Bikes 4 Kidz program and encouraging physical activity, supporting healthful eating, and maintaining a balanced life. Last year, Allina Health partnered with the non-profit organization Free Bikes 4 Kidz to give 5,000 free bikes, helmets and concussion prevention information to underserved children throughout our service area. More than 800 employee volunteers collected, refurbished and distributed bikes and helmets to kids in need.
Buffalo Hospital was recognized with the Patient Safety Improvement Award (small hospital category). Buffalo Hospital demonstrated its commitment to patient safety at all levels of the hospital. As a result, there has been a significant increase in near miss reporting and staff involvement in process improvement, a decrease in harmful events and an improvement in patient outcomes.
New Ulm Medical Center received the Innovation of the Year in Patient Care Award (small hospital category) for its new social worker program to provide better care coordination services to emergency department and clinic patients. The results of this program in its first six months are impressive. Sixty-nine patients received a meaningful intervention by the social worker, resulting in a 41 percent reduction in ED visits and a 49 percent reduction in hospital admissions. Thirteen patients were admitted directly from the ED to a nursing home, preventing the cost of an inpatient hospital stay.
